Community support overflowed for the family of a young Edwards mother killed in a car accident in Camden County in July.

According to information provided by Climax Springs/Edwards area resident Michael Cundiff, an enthusiastic if saddened crowd of well-wishers from the remote community gathered at Oh Tommy’s Bar and Grill on August 26, 2018 to celebrate the life of Brittany Barfield.

The 24-year-old was killed when the minivan she was riding in collided head-on with an SUV on Route Z on July 12, 2018. According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol initial report, the minivan driver Kevin Kennedy was seriously injured. The driver of the SUV, Ronald Rhodes, had minor injuries.

Barfield was a mother of two young children who, along with another child, were in the minivan at the time of the crash but did not have any reported injuries as they were all properly secured with safety devices. The crash report indicated Barfield and Kevin Kennedy were not using seatbelts.

Three-year-old Jason and one-year-old Kieran Kennedy were brought to the restaurant on Highway 7 for the event by their grandmother Tina Fortner who is the chef there. Owner and proprietor Theresa Judd hosted the event as a fundraiser for the children.

The family was greeted by an overflow crowd who came to support the family.

In addition to barbecued ribs, chicken and brats, the community brought dozens of side dishes to share. Activities included horseshoes, corn hole, gift basket raffles and a 50/50 drawing. Music was provided by Mitch Shields. Many businesses donated gift baskets, coupons and numerous other items that were raffled off in support of the family.
