Passenger killed and driver seriously injured while others receive minor injuries.

An Edwards woman was killed in a motor vehicle collision in northwest Camden County Thursday morning.

Brittany L. Barfied was a passenger in a minivan that collided head-on with an SUV on Route Z about one mile north of Highway 7 around 8:30 a.m. July 12, 2018. The 24-year-old was pronounced dead on scene by Camden County Medical Examiner Dee Ballard at 9:50 a.m., according to the Missouri State Highway Patrol crash report.

Kevin J. Kennedy, the driver of the minivan, suffered injuries described as serious. The 21-year-old Edwards resident was flown by the Staff for Life helicopter to University Hospital in Columbia for treatment. 

Three children in the minivan received injuries described as minor. Anthony Phillips, 10, of Camdenton; Jason J. Kennedy, 3, and Kieran W. Kennedy, 1, both of Edwards were all taken to Lake Regional Hospital for treatment.

The driver of the SUV was Ronald R. Rhodes, 63, of Climax Springs. He received injuries described as minor and was taken to Lake Regional Hospital.

The MSHP report states the 2003 Dodge Grand Caravan driven by Kevin Kennedy crossed the center line and struck head-on the 2015 Ford Edge driven by Rhodes. The minivan overturned, and Barfield was partially ejected. 

The report indicates neither Barfield nor Kevin Kennedy were wearing seatbelts. The children were all utilizing safety device. Rhodes was also wearing a seatbelt. 

Both vehicles were totaled. The MSHP major crash investigation unit responded. 

According to the report, Barfield’s death was MSHP Troop F region’s third fatality in July and its 33rd in 2018.
