Since 1989, Witt Family Fireworks has stayed committed to supplying the lake with fireworks and keeping it all in the family. Whether it be through one of their many tents, or the main store outside of Eldon, they keep a fresh stock ready to go every year.

The family’s first operation center was a tent where their main store is now. At the age of 10, Brian Witt says he would travel with his brother to Kansas City to sell fireworks out of a tent. This is how it all started. Ever since, Witt and his family have continued to spread their fireworks sales across the lake.

“I didn’t really have a choice,” Witt said. “My brother got me into fireworks and it’s stayed that way.”

The store sources their fireworks from factories in China, which come on a boat which they unload at the start of the season. They also make sure to buy some within the US, from Missouri locations all the way to Texas. Witt says he makes sure to buy only from reputable companies while also making sure that the selection they bring in is of a wide variety.

Helen Witt says that the seasons can be tough, but the family would miss doing it every year if they weren’t able to. Staffing the tents every day can be a challenge, through heat and rain. She says setting up tents and making sure the stock is organized correctly is a factor of the job that many don’t consider.

This is where she says the family aspect of the business is so important. She says that days have their ups and down through the season, but it’s important to keep everyone a part of the operation.

Every single product in the store is purchased by the Witt family. This adds a need for security, and Witt says that he can trust family more than anyone. When closing shop at night, he knows that he doesn’t have to worry about anything being taken or mishandled. The family was raised into the business and the respect for it has been engrained.

Over the many years in business, family members have passed, though are still remembered by frequent visitors to the shop. Helen Witt says Doral Witt, Brian’s father, was a local favorite. He would be seen in his straw hat behind the register every year. Since his passing, she says they still have customers come through asking for him by name.

“He’d love to talk to the customers about the fireworks,” Helen Witt said. “It’s not the same without him.”

Witt Family Fireworks has nearly 1,000 fireworks to choose from. Helen Witt says that they have anything from child safe options to big, grand show options that are ready for the enthusiasts. The store has provided fireworks for multiple shows across the lake over the years, including Camp Bagnell. They even have individual fireworks that cost over $100 each, containing 156 shots on a single fuse.

When the big rush comes through, which normally sits a few days and into the 4th of July, Brian Witt says they experience over 20 cars a day coming through for all of their fireworks for the season. With the holiday quickly approaching, he says they are excited to get into the busiest time of the year and prepare to keep it running smoothly.

“It’s like getting a broken toy on Christmas,” he said. “You can’t just replace it the next day, the moment is over. You have to make sure everything is right the first time.”
