Criss A. Hensley, former Director of Special Education for the Odessa R-7 Schools, in Odessa, MO, died on June 20th, 2018, in Lee’s Summit, MO. He was born on January 18, 1950 in St. Joseph, MO to Mina Jo (Poe) Hensley and Dr. Lyle D. Hensley. He is survived by many cousins living throughout the United States and the Kansas City, MO area.

Mr. Hensley attended Eldon High School in Eldon, MO and graduated in 1968. He graduated from SMSU in 1973 with a degree in Political Science, and again in 1975 with a degree in Education. For the next few years, he taught History and Psychology in two rural schools in south central Missouri. About that same time, he became interested in Guidance and Counseling and obtained a Master’s Degree in Counseling from SMSU in 1978. From 1970 to 1978, he was a member of the Missouri Army National Guard located in Jefferson City, MO.

In 1979, he took a position at Camdenton Schools close to the Lake of the Ozarks, Missouri. He worked as a Psychological Examiner, Counselor and Assistant to the Director of Special Education (Dr. Sharon Price). He worked with both special education and gifted students through testing and counseling.

In 1993, he took the position of Director of Special Education in the Odessa R-7 School District in Odessa, MO. At Odessa, he administered and developed programs for Special Education students Pre-K through grade 12, Parents As First Teachers and Nursing Services. In 2005, he retired from education after 30 years.

After retirement, Mr. Hensley split his time between a small condo in Osage Beach, MO and an apartment in Lee’s Summit, MO. He enjoyed many cultural activities in the Kansas City area, as well as time with friends and family.

Funeral arrangements are planned by Greenlawn Funeral Home South located at 441 W. Battlefield, Springfield, MO 65807. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the JO Hensley Memorial Scholarship Fund managed by Central Bank of Lake of the Ozarks, 3848 Hwy 54, PO Box 207, Osage Beach, MO 65065. There will be a visitation on Friday, June 29, 2018 from 1 PM to 3 PM at the funeral home. The interment will immediately follow in Hazelwood Cemetery.
