A Kansas City man has been charged for drug possession and illegally carrying a weapon as a felon after a traffic stop in Laurie.

According to a press release from Laurie Police Chief Mark Black, a white powdery substance in the vehicle field-tested positive for cocaine and more than a pound of marijuana was recovered.

Officers stopped a silver Chevrolet Tahoe on Saturday, March 31, 2018 for allegedly crossing the center line numerous times. The driver and sole occupant of the SUV was identified as Raphael Rodriguez Jr. of Kansas City, Missouri.

While speaking with Rodriguez, officers observed that he was sweating profusely, the press release stated. Officers could reportedly also smell an odor of alcohol and marijuana coming from the vehicle. 

A search of Rodriguez discovered a white powdery substance that field tested positive for cocaine, the press release stated. When officers searched the vehicle, they located a .40 caliber handgun and a locked black duffle bag. 

After a search warrant was obtained for the bag, officers allegedly discovered 1 pound, 1.5 ounces of marijuana. While speaking with Rodriguez, it was discovered that he was a convicted felon and could not legally own a firearm.
Rodriguez was transported to the Morgan County Adult Detention Center where he was charged by the Morgan County prosecutor for felony possession of a controlled substance and unlawful possession of a weapon. Rodriguez' bond was set at $75,000 surety.
