I want to start by saying I cherish the local retired teachers. Several are friends and family. As a former School Board Member and Director of the Missouri School Board Association, I fully understand your retirement and I would do nothing to endanger it. However, it came to my attention that the School Boards that contribute 14.5% of the funds into their retirement system does not have a spot on the retirement board.

It only seems fair.  This is your money and School Board members must be stewards of those funds.  In addition, when a person that has been paying into the system but cashes out and does not participate in the retirement plan, the taxpayer’s money is not returned to the School District it was given from.  This also seems unfair.

So, I filed House Bill 2660 to correct this problem.  This bill would put a school board member on the board.  In addition, it would require the money put into the fund for a person that has not vested in the system (did not teach 5 years) would be returned to help educate children.  It seems simple.

Unfortunately, the Retired Teachers Association (RTA) has been hijacked by political opportunists.  At every opportunity, these worse of bully politicians attempt to scare the members into believing that their pension is endangered.  This is the worse type of politics and it is despicable.  I was able to inform teachers that approach me as to what was happening, but it was sad that these unfortunate retirees are being used in this manner.

The bill that I explained above is now the target of their scare tactics.  Look my bill up at www.house.mo.gov, what I described above is exactly what it does, however, I have been approached by teachers that have been told something different.  These members are being told that this is a move to change their retirement system and put it in jeopardy.  This is totally false and just another attempt to fool their members.  It also now makes me wonder, what is going on with this board, that they don’t want anyone else to look at it.  It makes me very suspicious.

I have a friend and a colleague that is a retired teacher and has refused to join the RTA until these tactics are discontinued.  I would urge all of my friends and family to take a serious look at RTA and determine if they really do have your best interest at heart or their own.
