An Illinois native and former intern with the Chicago Tribune has joined the Lake Sun staff as a reporter and photographer.
Mitch Prentice began duties this week after most recently working as a reporter with the Galesburg Register-Mail, an Illinois daily newspaper owned by GateHouse Media which is also the parent company of Lake Sun and Lake Media.
Prentice graduated from Knox College in Galesburg in May 2017 with a bachelor's degree in creative writing and a minor in journalism. His entry into journalism began with a summer internship in music journalism with Chicago Tribune's music critic Greg Kot. Prentice created a music blog and eventually a music website while in college. He also was editor of The Knox Student, the college newspaper, his senior year.
Through an opportunity offered by GateHouse Media, Prentice completed a 10-week internship after his graduation from Knox College. He's been a stringer for Galesburg Register-Mail from August until accepting the position with the Lake Sun.
Prentice also has a strong interest in photography having completed an independent study project his senior year at Knox when he won first place in an Illinois College Press Association photo contest for spot news.
Aside from photography, Prentice is an avid yo-yo enthusiast having taught and performed at numerous competitions.
He and his fiance, Hannah McCullough, plan an October wedding.
