A new powerboat racing organization that had announced an initial plan to hold its first national championship event at Lake of the Ozarks in 2018 has now indicated it will not be coming to Missouri next year.

In a press release on Facebook, Race World Offshore said it is now in the final stages of developing its 2018 schedule with the national championship now to be held at Riviera Beach, Fla. September 14-16.

“Our goal is to provide the best venues and experience for our racers and fans. Sometimes that means modifying the schedule to accommodate the varied interests of the racers and the cities that host us,” the press release stated. “Whether it’s related to specific fishing seasons, manatee considerations or even accommodating the schedules of the Fire and Police departments of each municipality, the principals at RWO are cognizant of these issues and currently working with all parties to optimize our inaugural season’s schedule.”

RWO blamed apparent confusion over its schedule on local news outlets publishing unconfirmed stories as competing racing series developed their schedules for the coming year.

In mid-November, RWO spokesperson John Potts had confirmed that RWO had selected Lake of the Ozarks as a race site in its inaugural season, working with local businessman and promoter Mike Shepherd, but a specific location on Lake of the Ozarks had yet to be decided.

Organizers would have had to obtain a regatta permit from the Missouri State Highway Patrol Water Patrol Division in order to hold such an event on Lake of the Ozarks and had not taken steps to do so at that time.

Other races on RWO’s new schedule for 2018 include:

• Race World Offshore Gran Prix, location to be announced, June 2-3

• Texas Outlaw Challenge, Clear Lake, Houston, Texas, June 23-24

• Race World Offshore Gran Prix, Greater Cleveland area, Ohio with full event details in process, July 19-22

• Race World Offshore Gran Prix, Dunkirk, N.Y., Aug. 17-19.
