The defendant is currently in a relationship with the victim’s mother, identified only as Jessica, with all three parties residing in Versailles where the alleged sexual assaults had been occurring.
A 38-year-old Versailles man has been charged with second degree statutory rape and fourth degree child molestation for allegedly sexually abusing a 15-year-old victim who is now pregnant, according to Morgan County court documents.
An arrest warrant was issued for Steven Paul Clark who was formally charged on December 1, 2017 with bond conditions set at $150,000, 10-percent cash or surety, according to CaseNet.com.
The investigation began on September 28, 2017 when the Versailles Police Department received a walk-in visit from Clark’s sister who reported that her brother had been sleeping with an unidentified female juvenile, according to the probable cause statement.
Clark is currently in a relationship with the victim’s mother, identified only as Jessica, with all three parties residing in Versailles where the alleged sexual assaults had been occurring. Versailles PD attempted to contact Clark for an interview, but he declined, according to the document. Clark’s sister, Dawn, however consented to giving a statement, telling the same story in detail.
The witness provided investigators with screenshots of conversations via text message between her and Clark along with conversations between her and Jessica, which allegedly reveal apparent knowledge of the events such as “He plans to marry her,” referring to Clark and the 15-year-old, according to the statement.
On October 8, 2017, officers were dispatched to the residence for a report of a female juvenile wanting to run away from her parent. Responding officers presented three search warrants for cell phones used by Jessica, the victim and Clark, obtained from an investigation on a previous incident.
Three weeks later during questioning, Versailles Police played an audio recording for Jessica that had been extracted from one of the cell phones. It was reportedly of a conversation between Jessica and the victim in which Jessica stated that she didn’t want to go to jail for being an accessory and (the victim) should marry Steven Clark so they won’t get arrested, according to the court document.
Jessica told police she didn’t know that the victim and Clark were having sexual intercourse, but said she did tell police that she knew the two had feelings for each other.
An interview with the victim was then conducted in which the same audio recording was played. The victim began crying, the document states.
After a break in the interview, police told the victim that Clark had confessed to having sexual intercourse with her, and they were concerned she may be pregnant. The victim stated she didn’t think she was pregnant, and indicated the first time she had sexual intercourse with Clark was sometime this past summer at their residence in Versailles residence.
On November 1, 2017, officers made contact with the Division of Family Services who confirmed through a doctor that the 15-year-old was pregnant and the results for sexually transmitted disease tests would be available at a later date, the document concluded.
