“Receiving this gear will greatly benefit us as well as the citizens we serve and the several other fire departments for which we provide mutual aid,” TFPD Training Officer Jeremy Phillips said.

The Tuscumbia Fire Protection District (TFPD), a volunteer organization located in the heart of Miller County, is set to receive four new sets of turnout gear thanks to a partnership between the National Volunteer Fire Council (NVFC) and Globe and DuPont Protection Solutions (DuPont).

According to press releases from the NVFC and Dupont, Tuscumbia was one of two additional departments who will receive the new sets of state-of-the-art personal protective equipment (PPE) to better protect the nation’s first responders. The Tanglewood Volunteer Fire Department in Lexington, Texas also received four new sets.

Approximately 10 years ago, the TFPD successfully applied for an Assistance to Firefighters Grant to obtain 10 new sets of PPE, but that gear is now considered outdated and obsolete according to current recommended safety standards, the releases stated.

“Receiving this gear will greatly benefit us as well as the citizens we serve and the several other fire departments for which we provide mutual aid,” TFPD Training Officer Jeremy Phillips said.

The TFPD is responsible for 55 square miles with a total permanent population of 1,100 residents. On top of mutual aid duties, the volunteer organization also sees an influx of approximately 1,000 transient residents who work in the district.

Response areas include three daycare centers, five major churches, the Miller County Health Department and Miller County Courthouse, along with a service station that stores 7,000 gallons worth of fuel storage.

Since 2012, the NFVC and Globe and Dupont have partnered to provide departments with equipment through annual giveaways. This award is a part of the Glove Gear Giveaway 2017 in which a total of 52 sets of PPE will be distributed to 13 departments in need. The giveaway is sponsored by Globe by MSA - The Safety Company, DuPont Protection Solutions, and DowDuPont Speciality Products Division.
