The first stop in Boonville should be to the Visitors Center where you’ll walk away with maps and a plan of action on what sites to see in this historic town. Located next to the Katy Trail, the visitors center is in close proximity to the Chamber of Commerce, the restored Katy Depot, and the Mitchell Antique Motorcar Museum, making it a great place to start.
Be sure to pick up a copy of the walking tour guide so you can take a self-guided tour to see 23 of Boonville’s key sites.
Stops in Boonville should include the Old Jail and Hanging Barn, the longest running jail in the state (which at one time housed Frank James); The Hain House, built in 1836; and the Russell Stovers store. The Roslyn Heights Mansion is open for tours by appointment. The home dates back to 1895 and is located on Main Street.
Block out a few hours to tour the headquarters of the Budweiser Clydesdales’ breeding grounds. You’ll be able to see these famous horses up close and tour the facility open through Nov. 5. Guided tours ($14 for adults, free for two and under) or V.I.P. Tours ($500/up to 16 people) are available by appointment. Go to www.warmspringsranch.com for more information.
If you are looking to spend the night, the 140-room Isle of Capris Casino would be a great choice, but it’s also the perfect stop to play your hand at blackjack or the slots.
