Bates is facing one count of first degree sodomy or attempted sodomy with a victim less than 12 years of age, an unclassified felony, and one count of first degree child molestation, a Class A felony.

A Camdenton father has been arrested on child sexual abuse charges.

According to a press release from the Camden County Sheriff’s Office, Gregory Floyd Bates, 43, was taken into custody Saturday, June 17.

The unidentified minor female victim appears to be the daughter of Bates, who disclosed to investigators that the abuse started around the time she was 9 years old. The victim told investigators the assaults had occurred on more than one occasion in which she was subjected to forced oral sex and inappropriate touching, according to the court document.

Another unidentified female also interviewed by police in the case alleged abuse by Bates when she was in her early teens.

Bates is facing one count of first degree sodomy or attempted sodomy with a victim less than 12 years of age, an unclassified felony, and one count of first degree child molestation, a Class A felony.

The sexual abuse allegations stem from Kids’ Harbor interviews conducted in Osage Beach on June 10 and June 15, 2017, which a detective for the Camden County Sheriff’s Office was requested to attend, according to the probable cause statement obtained by the Lake Sun.

The first charge of sodomy, forced oral sex, relates to the June 10 interview in which the victim is around nine years of age.

A second female said in the June 15 interview that she had lived with Bates for approximately six months during her 8th grade school year during which time she said he touched her inappropriately.

According to the probable cause statement, this female confronted Bates at some point, saying “You do not touch that little girl. She is 9 years old, at least I was 13 or 14.” She added that she felt bad about not telling someone before now.

The investigation appears to have begun when a woman described as someone’s adoptive mother and Bates’ spouse - the court document was heavily redacted - contacted the Children’s Hotline after after she had observed a video of [redaction] on a tablet, according to the court document which described a disturbing video involving the victim.

On June 17, 2017, detectives conducted an interview with Bates regarding the allegations made against him.

“Greg stated he had been fighting with his wife of 17 years and had suicidal thoughts. I told Greg allegations were made and if he knew anything about them,” the document states. “Greg replied since the allegations were about his daughter, ‘it’s more likely sexual.’ When asked about details regarding electronics, Greg requested a lawyer and the interview was ceased.”

Bates is being held in the Camden County Detention Center on a $1 million cash-only bond.
