With the new Route 5 opening to the public on June 29, take a look back at what it took to get there.
About the Project
The Route 5 realignment project is the largest grading and excavating project in MoDOT's history. It required more than 7.3 million cubic yards of soil and rock to be moved in the nearly seven miles between Route 7 and the Niangua Bridge.
The construction of four bridges and two interchanges were also included in the project costs.
The majority of the seven-mile realignment is four-lane divided highway.
Groundbreaking took place on May 15, 2007.
Total Cost
$53 million
