Daina Velarde loves to work in her flower gardens and isn't afraid to make changes whenever she doesn't get the results she wants. She has a large variety of plants in her various gardens, and enjoys mixing plant and color schemes to produce the effect she is looking for.
Although she does buy some annuals, Daina plants mostly perennials which will enhance the gardens all season long. She plants a variety of different kinds of lilacs, hostas, hydrangeas, lilies and irises. She enjoys watching the plants return each spring. Her husband, José, says she can't pass a nursery without buying another plant!
Daina has set aside an area in the yard for propagation too. She loves to take clippings of plants and make new starts saying that it's an economical and fun way to plant a garden full of flowers and bushes. She does supplement her flowers with fertilizer when needed, but her best friend is the compost! It makes wonderful soil to replenish her gardens.
Daina is from Lithuania and has also brought plants back with her from there. One in particular plant in the yard is a Ruta Plant - a plant used for ceremonies in Lithuania, in hairpieces, and in gardens.
Like many people from the lake area, she and her husband have used Ozark rock to make garden beds. They also made a stairway using the same rock so they could get to and through the gardens more easily.
Daina also has plum, pear and peach trees along with grapevines, yellow raspberries and gooseberries which keep her busy during canning season.
The yard has very nice trees for shade but she says she loves her magnolia tree and gets many aromatic flowers each year.
Before I left Daina's house, she brought out the most beautiful white orchid! It seems she is a house gardener too and cares for 10 orchids in all! It was a delight to visit with her and experience the joy she has in caring for her plants the way she does!
