Denny Gillen looks no farther than Lake of the Ozarks to train for the numerous triathlons and marathons he participates in throughout the year.

Between the roads and water, it's the perfect setting, Gillen says, to stay in shape.

Gillen spends many hours running on the lake's roads training for the various endurance events.

Earlier this year, Highway 54 was his favorite roadway as he geared up for the Boston Marathon. This legendary race is one of the world's oldest annual marathon events and requires a qualifying time in order to participate.

The marathon is known to be one of the most difficult courses mainly because of "Heartbreak Hill" - a steep hill towards the end of the 26.2-mile run that drains most participants of their remaining energy.

Gillen completed the Boston Marathon in 3 hours and 41 minutes, running an average 8:27-minute mile the whole distance.

His time qualified him to participate in next year's marathon.

Still left to go this year, Gillen will compete in two Ironman endurance races and several more triathlons - all true tests of his endurance.

The Ironman is a combination of biking, running and swimming but to the extreme.

When he's done, Gillen will have raced more than 70 miles per event.
