They work like lives depend on them because we do. Watch firsthand some of the physical trials of being a firefighter at the Scott Firefighter Combat Challenge Lake of the Ozarks.

On Sept. 9 and 10, this annual event will be held at the Osage Beach Hy-Vee/Target parking lot.

The Challenge attracts hundreds of U.S. and Canadian firefighters at more than 25 locations, including the one here, each year. The event features firefighters competing in a variety of tasks while wearing full bunker gear and the Scott 5.5 Air-Pak breathing apparatus. The simulation of real-life firefighting in a competitive atmosphere encourages firefighter fitness and demonstrates the rigors of the profession to the public.

Pairs of competitors race head-to-head and against the clock, climbing a five-story tower, hoisting, chopping, dragging hoses and pulling a 175-pound “victim” to safety. A kids’ challege will be held with a mini version of the main obstacle course.
