Every week Dave and CJ Dunklee travel to the Harry S Truman Memorial VA Hospital in Columbia to give guitar lessons to disabled veterans. An average of 50 men and women show up to take part in the free program which continues to grow.

It’s called the Healing Box Project, formed by the Lake area couple as a non-profit to teach wounded soldiers how to play the guitar in an effort to help them heal from injuries suffered during combat. So far 90 guitars have been distributed to veterans.

While CJ handles coordinating the program, the lessons are given by Dave, a retired music teacher and member of the band Double D. Several fundraisers are coming up to fund the charity.

The largest fundraiser of the year, the 5th annual Soldier Benefit will be held June 4 at The Fish & Co. from 12-5 p.m. A silent auction of cool artwork, signed guitars (Charlie Daniels and Van Halen), Royals baseball tickets, gift certificates, Mizzou tickets, and more will be held. There will be live music, on the lakeside patio and deck, with indoor air conditioning and seating available.
