Two years ago, F*Bombs drummer Matt Kreisel put on a wig, a fake mustache and a bowling shirt in preparation for the band's show at Captain Ron's in Sunrise Beach.
"My friend, Pete, and I decided that we were going as members of a cheesy '80s bowling team," Kreisel said. "We had a blast with it and were blown away with the costumes that were there that night. We had robots, superheroes and some incredible pirates."
Ron Duggan, owner of Captain Ron's, would steal the show with his pirate costume, looking the part of Captain Jack Sparrow from Disney's "Pirates of the Carribbean." Last year, Kreisel got his revenge, winning the costume contest with his version of Optimus Prime from the "Transformers" series.
"I knew I had a good costume, but there was another guy who looked exactly like Michael Phelps in Speedos. I think it was a close one."
Over the past couple of years, the rest of the band has shown up dressed as anything form life-sized bananas, beer cans, "Sesame Street" characters and Elton John.
"Out goal as a band has always been to have fun, and Captain Ron's is the perfect venue for a good time," said bassist Josh Fields. "Halloween is our favorite weekend of the year because of the costume contests and the great turn-out we see every year."
As in years past, F*Bombs will bring their unique brand of show to Captain Ron's over Halloween weekend. On Oct. 30-31, the band will play from 8 p.m.-midnight.
"We don't try to be a traditional cover band at the lake," said keyboardist and vocalist Josh Spangler. "Cover bands are a dime a dozen down here. We try to stay fresh in our song selection. We do anything from the Beatles to Lil' Wayne. Mike (McCurdy, vocals and guitar) even broke into Britney Spears down here last time because someone told him he wouldn't do it. We treat it like a party amongst friends instead of a band playing to an audience."
F*Bombs has been a staple in the Captain Ron's live music rotation, playing multiple weekends during the summer, as well as the past two St. Patrick's Day parties.
"We have a great relationship with the management and staff here at Ron's." McCurdy said. "We can't wait to get the Halloween weekend going. We've got a ton of contests, prizes and freebies between Captain Ron's and the band."
There will be a costume contest during the band's Oct. 31 show.
When asked what the band will be dressing as this year, the answer came in almost in unison: Wait and see.
