A law requiring dock owners to post 911 addresses in plain view continues to raise questions for dock owners who in turn are turning to the agencies implementing the new rule answers.
Missouri State Water Patrol and AmerenUE officials say the new law that takes effect Jan. 1, 2010 has triggered a flood of phone calls from dock owners trying to make sure they have the right address and lettering posted in time for the rule change.
The law is similar to AmerenUE’s regulation for signage on docks.
AmerenUE requires all dock owners who are replacing or installing new permit and address signs to comply with their guidelines. The new law makes it mandatory for the nearest 911 emergency address to be on all docks. Failure to comply could result in being issued a citation by the Water Patrol.
The posting requirements for AmerenUE include displaying the permit number, street address and zip code in 3-inch block lettering of a contrasting color from the background material.
The sign should be placed on the lake side of the dock in a location most visible from the cove or channel.
