There is hope for abandoned and abused horses in the lake area.
Connie Hendrix, owner of Forget-Me-Not Horse Rescue & Sanctuary in Linn Creek, has led the charge to focus attention on horses that have been abused, neglected and abandoned by providing care and rehabilitation to them.
A fundraiser was held last fall to help support her cause since medical, housing and feed costs are climbing as she receives more and more horses needing care.
The first volunteer meeting for individuals interested in horse rescue will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday at Willowes Restaurant on A Road.
“We plan to discuss ideas for our next fundraiser and to set goals for the sanctuary,” Hendrix explained. “The last fundraiser was a great success and we had so many people who wanted to help that we decided to get them together to see how they can help.”
Hendrix called the meeting a brainstorming session so the project can move forward. She hopes to have the next fundraiser in February or March.
“We still need to raise money for hay and grain for this winter,” she said. “We’re also taking donations of either money or feed.”
Hendrix said sponsors are sought for horses on either a short-term basis or long-term basis.
“This would make a great Christmas gift for somebody, to have them as a sponsor of a horse. We’ll send a Christmas card with a picture of the horse they’re sponsoring,” she explained.
And horses can be adopted as well.
Hendrix invited anyone interested in providing good care for horses to the meeting. There will be introductions, and people can have lunch at the same time.
Forget-Me-Not Horse Rescue & Sanctuary has filed for 501©3 non-profit status.
