A Versailles man accused of stealing large amounts of money, according to a press release issued by the Morgan County Sheriff's Office, is being held on $1 million cash bond.

On Jan. 19,  the Morgan County Sheriff's Office received a report from an area company that a former employee might have stolen a large sum of money.  He allegedly obtained contracts for the company but provided false documents to the company and did not turn over all the proceeds.  No customers were affected by the transactions.

An investigation was conducted by the Detective Division of the Department.  It involved the cooperation of several banks and sifting through company records from the victim company.  The investigation allegedly revealed the suspect may have diverted as much as 1.4 million dollars in this manner over a period of years.

On Jan. 27, deputies arrested Daniel R. Bebermeyer, 49, of Versailles, at his home without incident.  He is currently being held in the Morgan County Adult Detention Center on the charge of Stealing.  His bond has been set at $1 million cash only with a special condition he surrender his passport.

The Sheriff's Office investigation is continuing and may be joined by federal authorities in the near future.
