  • Letter to the editor: Federal government, and VA, shouldn’t favor a religion

  • Regarding Mr. Bassett's letter about Veteran Administration chapels. I believe that one can find that there is justification for this situation that predates any 2008 resolution.

  • *Editor’s Note: This opinion is in response to a Lake View titled “Stop the VA insanity” published in the Thursday, August 14 Lake Sun. The letter addresses the alleged removal of Christian symbols from VA chapels.
     
    Regarding Mr. Bassett's letter about Veteran Administration chapels.  I believe that one can find that there is justification for this situation that predates any 2008 resolution. 
    It's the anti-establishment clause in the first amendment to the U.S. Constitution.  The VA is operated by the federal government and any space it provides for contemplative meditation should not be displaying sectarian religious icons nor be used for such purposes.
    I recognize the significant part that Christian churches play in our spiritual and social fabric, but support of these institutions is not part of the VA's mission.
