  • Relay for Life of Morgan County held its wrap-up meeting Tuesday, July 29 at the Morgan County Library in Versailles and celebrated its fundraising efforts for 2014. The local franchise of the national American Cancer Society (ACS) event has raised $28,161 with just a couple of fundraisers not yet completed.
ACS Relay Specialist Laura Morris called the contribution "hugely significant" and an "amazing amount" for the small number of teams involved in Morgan County's Relay.
The funds raised will help the ACS provide support to cancer patients, education about cancer and for cancer research.
Morris handed out awards at the meeting.
The Big CR earned recognition as the team raising the most money this year. Captained by Diane Holtz, The Big CR raised $12,037. They were followed by Hillbilly Heroes, Team Beth and The Avengers.
Susann Huff of the Hillbilly Heroes was honored as the top individual fundraiser followed by Beth Draffen of Team Beth, Jodie Hunsaker of Hillbilly Heroes, Holtz and Donna Batliner of Hillbilly Heroes.
Holtz was also this year's recipient of the Gordan Klatt Award. This recognition goes to Relay committee members who go above and beyond to support Relay. It is voted on by fellow committee members.
The Bank of Versailles, Lake Media and the American Legion Auxiliary were also honored as major sponsors of the 2014 event.
Morris and Relay committee members at the meeting discussed initial plans for the 2015 event as well including ways to boost attendance. According to Morris, attendance at Relay events has begun to lag across the country.
In addition to a change in organizational structure, the Morgan County Relay leadership will focus on trying to get youth more involved.
