I had a friend from Lake Ozark mail me a copy of your great article regarding the deer herd in Missouri. You really hit the nail on the head.
I have owned property near Climax Springs for 14 years that I purchased so that I and my son would have a place to hunt. I also have a cabin on the property. I have about $100,000 invested in it. The deer herd has been reduced to the point that it is almost not worth hunting any more.
I have written and complained to the MDC (Missouri Department of Conservation) repeatedly that allowing hunters to shoot too many does each year is killing us. Then they go to the 4-point rule and shortly thereafter comes chronic wasting. When I complained to a game warden that we hunt in heavy woods in Missouri and that it is often difficult to distinguish between a 3-point and a 4-point that if they shot a 3-point by mistake they would probably just leave it in the woods for the coyotes. His response was “Oh, they would have shot it anyway.”
When I retired in Missouri and moved to Florida, I was still able to purchase an out-of-state landowners permit for about $75 and $15 for doe. Then they had some meeting around the state and supposedly said Missouri hunters wanted out-of-state hunters to pay more, so they also discontinued the out-of-state landowners permit license.
I now have to pay $225 for a buck permit and $25 for a doe. This is on my own property that I pay real estate taxes on each year and plant door food plots.
    Is this fair?
The MDC is supervised by a bunch of rich horn hunters and to hell with those of us that just want to get together with friends and family and shoot a couple of deer and enjoy the venison. A major shakeup at MDC needs to take place. I wonder what sort of favors were passed out by the insurance companies.
Thanks again for the excellent article.
