  • With a recent donation from a local women's club, the Westlake Aquatic Center reached 75 percent of its goal in the indoor pool's 100 Helping Hands Campaign. West Lake Newcomers Club president Linda Lagergren recently presented a check on behalf of the organization to aquatic center representative Lucy Silliman. The donation pushed funds raised to approximately $7,500.
Started in May, the 100 Helping Hands Campaign is asking 100 people to give $100 to pay off debt incurred in early 2014. The $100 donation can be made by one individual, two people joining together giving $50 each, or a members of an organization banding together to keep this Westside asset affordable.
The debt arose from borrowing funds for the installation of a new shower room and the emergency purchase of a new boiler.
The aquatic center had a catastrophic boiler fire in November 2013 that closed the facility. To make repairs as soon as possible, and upgrade shower facilities during the closure, the WAC board of Directors secured emergency funding through a loan from the Central Bank of Lake of the Ozarks. This expense was not foreseen or included in their annual operating budget.
With the $10,000 loan, the pool was able to make the necessary fixes and reopen.
Many senior citizens enjoy the pool which helps keep them mobile. It is also used for therapy and rehabilitation following surgery. The pool is a hub for friends to gather and visit while participating in healthy life-lengthening exercise.
Donations are tax deductible. For more information about contributing, call 573-374-7370 or go to Westlake Aquatic Center online. Checks may be sent to P.O. Box 1532 Laurie, MO 65038.
