  • An Kansas man was killed and a Versailles woman was seriously injured in a two-car accident Monday afternoon in Morgan County.
    Alexander Zych, 87, of Olathe, Kan. was pronounced dead by just before 3 p.m. at University Hospital in Columbia, Mo. after being flown there for treatment by Staff for Life following the crash on Highway 5 near Twin Bay Rd. that occurred around 1:10 p.m. July 14.
    In the other vehicle, Beth A. Draffen, 58, of Versailles received serious injuries in the crash and was also flown by Staff for Life to University Hospital. Passenger Kenneth C. Draffen, 58, of Versailles received moderate injuries. He was transported by Mid-Mo Ambulance to Capital Region Medical Center in Jefferson City for treatment.
    According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol report, the crash occurred as the 2013 Toyota SUV, driven southbound by Zych, crossed the centerline and struck head-on the 2008 Pontiac SUV driven by Beth Draffen.
    All three occupants of the vehicles were listed as wearing seat belts.
    Zych's death was the second in July for the Troop F area of the Highway Patrol and the 34th for 2014.
    According to Morgan County 911 and Emergency Management, personnel with the Gravois Fire Protection District and the Morgan County Sheriff's Department also responded to the crash.
    At least one of the vehicles caught fire at some point, and the fire was extinguished by the GFPD.
