  • Supplies are still needed for Camden County Child Advocacy Council's Back to School Fair coming up in August. The Council hosted a back to school drive on Tuesday night at Heroes Sports Saloon in Osage Beach. According to one organizer, Rhonda Wilkening, a local business owner donated 40 backpacks and the organization received more than $400 worth of donations on top of basic school supplies.
More school supply drives are scheduled for this summer. On Friday, July 18 from 10 a.m. until noon, volunteers will be taking donations at Orscheln Farm & Home in Camdenton. During the same weekend, July 18-20, donations will be accepted at the Camdenton Walmart.
For Wilkening, these drives are critical to helping students have a great start to the school year.
"You don't want any child to be ridiculed or made fun of because they do not have the supplies they need to start school," Wilkening said.
Child Advocacy has already collected a good amount of backpacks and are focused on receiving basic school supplies now. During the Back to school fair on August 7, students will receive some of the supplies they need for the year.
"We provide a portion of the list and make sure they have enough to start school," Wilkening added.
The supplies and sock and underwear vouchers provided by Child Advocacy will be handed out as a first come first serve basis during the fair. Volunteers are needed to help run the fair. To sign up, call 573-873-3531. Supplies can be dropped off at the Child Advocacy Thrift Store in Camdenton located at 77 Dawson Road. All donations are tax deductible.
