Starting in January 2015, Eldon Career Center will be offering a Registered Nursing program through State Fair Community College. This program will compliment the one-year practical nursing program that is already offered at the career center each January.
"It is a part of our vision to create Eldon as a great place to live and to train a good workforce for our community," Eldon R-I Superintendent Matt Davis said.
He added that the district's goal is to “offer classes to improve quality of life in our community.”
The program will prepare students to meet the requirements of the MSBN for Registered Nursing credentials.
State Fair plans to accept 25 students into the program. Students should expect to be in class Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. until 4 p.m. each day.
"We encourage our students to not work while in the program because of the rigor of the program and the amount of necessary study time," Courtney Moon with State Fair said. "Part-time work would be the most a student would be able to handle along with their class, clinical and study schedules."
Davis said that he is pleased with the school's relationship with State Fair Community College so far. Practical nursing and Industrial Technology are already offered. A welding program is in the works.
"We look forward to expanding partnership with them," Davis said of State Fair.
For Davis and the district, it is all about improving the workforce and local economy.
If courses can be offered locally then residents have an option close to home to further their education.
"We continue to look at expanding our post secondary options here in Eldon," Davis added.
