  • Is America the “Land of the Free”? Well, for some of us it is.
I have read many opinions in this paper and other papers that address the “Constitutional” rights of Americans and how these rights are being taken away. I have read how the government should not interfere with our personal lives, our religion.
I have read how “rednecks …believe in God and Country, they usually have strong family ties, and they feel that their first amendment right of free speech and the free exercise of their religious beliefs along with their second amendment right to bear arms should be the eleventh and twelfth commandments from God.”
Yet the belief actually is that these freedoms should only be granted those who believe as they believe.
As a country, we have a long history of persecution of those whom we see as different from us, and we do this in the name of God and Country.
When out of fear we justify being stopped without cause, based on race, to show proof of citizenship; when out of ignorance we seek to deny the LGBT community the same rights enjoyed by heterosexuals; we perpetuate this persecution in the name of God and country.
The second sentence of the Declaration of Independence states that “...all men are created equal.” not some, but all.
It says that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness — endowed not by Your Creator and not A Creator but THEIR Creator.
Is it not time that we afford everyone equal opportunity and chances for Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness?
Is it not time that we as a Country accept our differences and build on these to make them our greatest asset?
Is it not time that we finally make America Land of the Free?
