  • Osage Community Lodge #2705 in Laurie held their annual Flag Day ceremony on June 14. The ceremony was well attended by members and guests. A special thanks to our local Boy Scout Troop for their presentation of flags representing different eras in our history and the American Legion Zack Wheat Post provided a Color Guard for the ceremony.
Doug Mattenlee detailed the history of our U.S. Flags and Fritz Ritzman provided a response. Terry Clayton ended the ceremony with a poem, "A Soldiers Salute". Following the service everyone enjoyed a great shrimp boil and music by Jay Rourke.
The anniversary of the Flag Resolution of 1777 was officially established by the Proclamation of President Woodrow Wilson on May 30, 1916. On August 3, 1949, President Truman, a member of the Elks, signed an Act of Congress designating June 14th as National Flag Day. The Elks were the first fraternal organization to celebrate Flag Day. This ceremony became mandatory years before the date on which the observance became a nation-wide practice by legal decree.
