  • A little piece of the lake area is headed overseas.
As part of the ongoing fleet restricting program, the Sunrise Beach Fire Protection District has sold one of its two fire boats. A 12-foot Jet Sonic fire boat has been sold to a buyer in the Netherlands.  On Sunday, the fire boat left Sunrise Beach headed to the Port of Baltimore.
“Whereas at one time this unit fit into our operational profile, the activity on the lake has gotten to the point where this unit is no longer practical for us,” SBFPD Chief Dennis Reilly said. “By working with a broker we were able to find someone who had an interest in this unit. I am very surprised to see it being shipped to the Netherlands, but if that is where it can be of service then I am happy we were able to find the buyer.”
Reilly says the proceeds from this sale will be sued to offset the cost of the hydrant expansion program along the Route MM corridor.  According to district officials, the reduction in the size of the apparatus fleet will make funds available for needed improvements, hold down cost over the long term, and allow the district to align its resources with the needs of the community.
