I was disappointed by Dan Field's "Memorial Days of days gone by" column. I feel that we are not "less of a people," or losing "the game" to old age when it comes to American patriotism.
Patriotism grows in the company of like-minded nurturing individuals with focused minds and can be channeled into endeavors that can be buoyed up and enhanced by joining with other patriots.
I, as a recent inductee in to Eldon Chapter of Daughters of the American REvolution, know we are actually doing well in the age "game."
At 56 years of age, I am actually older than most of the officers in my chapter. I worried that I would be too old.
If we indeed seem to operate in the vast silent underbelly of local civic organizations, I can personally bear witness to the 29 dozen American Veterans' graves who flew our flags for Memorial Day.
As patriots, only American manufactured American flags made the journey with our chapter to the Eldon cemetery.
Patriotism, historic preservation, and support of education, including scholarships, are our DAR convictions. By tracing our American heritage through our lineage, we leave our American legacy to our families, both past and future generations.
The appropriate organizations are here at the Lake of the Ozarks. It is up to you, the reader, to step up and join. You can better yourself, central Missouri and our country. The least we all can do is some voluntary community service.
We are staid in that we are respectable. We are not staid in that we are stuffy. We are the practicing American patriots of 2014. Won't you join us?
