  • Improvements to Highway 135 in southern Morgan County have been included in the draft version of the 2015-2019 State Transportation Improvement Program (STIP).
The overall plan is scheduled for review and approval by the Missouri Highways and Transportation Commission on July 9, and there is no reason to believe the Morgan County project would be cut from the STIP at this point, according to Missouri Department of Transportation spokesperson Bob Lynch.
The improvements will include an asphalt overlay — low type resurfacing — from the intersection with Highway 52 in Stover to the intersection with Highway 5 in Laurie — approximately 20.65 miles of roadway, according to details on the project in the STIP. Two-foot paved shoulders on each side will be added to the roadway as additional safety measures that the narrow and windy highway is currently lacking.
Highway 135 is considered a minor arterial roadway through the region. It had an average daily traffic flow in 2011 within the 730 to 1,441 range, according to the Lake of the Ozarks Council of Local Governments 2014 Regional Transportation Plan. A 2011 MoDOT assessment rated the pavement of the highway in poor condition, according to the regional plan.
The addition of shoulders to the highway is similar to other projects MoDOT has been doing in the region lately when it goes in for a standard overlay project. Last year, MoDOT had shoulders added to Highway 5 through the Westside in combination with an overlay. This year, Highway 52 from Highway 54 to Highway 17 in Miller County is also getting shoulders.
The estimated total price tag for the Highway 135 project is $3,095,000 with the state covering the entire cost. Construction alone is expected to cost around $2,875,000.
With the bid award slated for Winter 2015, construction would take place next year.
Another significant project proposed in the lake area is pavement and shoulder improvements — low type resurfacing — to Route Y in Miller County from Eldon to the end of state maintenance in Morgan County in the North Shore area of the Lake of the Ozarks. Pavement conditions in 2011 of the 7.17 miles of roadway varied from poor to average, according to the LOCLG regional plan. The estimated total cost of the project — which includes engineering — is $1,840,000. The bid award date is Winter 2015.
MoDOT has also set aside approximately $604,000 in transportation enhancement funds for ADA improvements to sidewalks in Morgan, Miller and Moniteau counties.
The draft STIP was opened for public review and comment on May 14 and will be open through June 13. Check out the STIP at www.modog.org and use a link provided on the STIP site to comment or call 1-888-ASK-MODOT.
