  • This year, the students at Oak Ridge Intermediate were introduced to a site hosted by Heritage Bank of the Ozarks called “Money Island”. This program is a multi-level online educational game provided to schools and community organizations through a sponsoring community financial organization. It uses games, videos and quizzes to teach financial skills.
The principals of financial responsibility and decision-making are built into the quests on Money Island. Kids save, spend, invest, and share “smackers” (dollars) as they strive to become gurus ready for financial success.
The Heritage Bank of the Ozarks’ website includes additional games, videos and other information for children as well as adults.
There are competitions between classrooms all across the United States to prove their financial savvy and win prizes.
This program has been a huge success for all the students at Oak Ridge. With the flexible online availability as well as the android app, many have achieved great wealth with their “Smackers” by playing often; as they can log onto the program on the bus, at home, during study time at school as well as in regularly scheduled computer lab time.
The six-week activity completed at school has been all the students can talk about. With the completion of the program approaching, the Heritage Bank of the Ozarks will be providing a pizza party for every classroom to congratulate the students for their participation in the program.
