  •  In observance of National Volunteer Month, Lake Regional Health System is recognizing the many community volunteers who assist Lake Regional Hospital Auxiliary.
Although Lake Regional Hospital Auxiliary volunteers contributed more than 74,200 service hours in 2013, many community members also donated their time.
“Auxiliary committees develop opportunities for volunteers to find the best fit for their talents,” said Auxiliary community relations committee member Georgia Cantwell. “We have volunteers who crochet hats and booties for each baby born at the Lake Regional Family Birth Center. They also crochet blankets that are sold in the Wish-U-Well gift shops.”
Auxiliary members have crocheted hundreds of hats and booties throughout the years. But with nearly 700 babies born at Lake Regional each year, several volunteers are needed to ensure each baby receives this gift. That’s where community members such as The Women of the Evangelical Church of America organization at Kent Memorial Lutheran Church in Sunrise Beach come in.
“The Auxiliary members focused on the Family Birth Center’s needs dedicate a significant amount of time, but it wouldn’t be possible without the help of community members,” Cantwell said. “We’re fortunate to be able to give back to the community and to also see the community supporting our mission, as well.”
Started in 1977, the Lake Regional Hospital Auxiliary now has more than 500 enthusiastic members of all ages. The volunteers are a diverse group comprised of housewives, retirees, doctors, active businessmen and others. Each volunteer participates in a variety of activities that fit their own special talents and interests, including staffing the hospital’s information desks, Wish-U-Well gift shops and Xpressions of Flavor coffee shops. They also assist staff with community events and host the Annual Hospital Ball. Held each fall, the ball is one of the hospital’s largest fundraisers.
