Visitors will find the Shaw Nature Reserve is open year round from 7 a.m. until sunset. It is located just two hours from the Lake of the Ozarks at Interstate 44 Exit 253. The reserve is a clandestine area located in the region known as the Ozark Border. This region divides the rolling prairie lands of northern Missouri from the Ozark Plateau.
Travelers will be amazed at what the reserve has to offer the public. There is a Visitor Center located at the entrance to the reserve. Visitors will receive a map of the hiking trails and other helpful information. Group tours are available. The reserve promotes “landscaping with native plants and the creation of native habitat areas. From planting a prairie to restoring a wetland”, and provides landscaping information. Individuals can learn more about landscaping at Native Plant School. Native plants and seeds are also available for sale at specific times during the year. The school is a year-round series of mostly outdoor learning sessions in the Whitmire Wildflower Garden at Shaw Nature Reserve.
The reserve offers fourteen miles of hiking trails, vehicle trails, geocaching, picnicing, photography, bird watching, woodlands, wetlands, and education about nature. There is an overnight center situated within a group of historic log buildings that date back to the 1800s. The reserve offers a Wilderness Wagon Tour, Bus Tour, Lunch & Dinner Tours.
Shaw Nature Reserve's Visitor Center has a wide selection of books for every interest and all ages. Seed packets, harvested at Shaw Nature Reserve, are for sale in the center. Seed types include various prairie grasses and flowers. The Visitor Center hours are 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday, and 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and Sunday.
Shaw Nature Reserve hosts events throughout the year. The Spring and Fall Shaw Wildflower Markets are annual events. The Reserve was designated a National Environmental Education Landmark in 1972. When visiting, remember that their policy includes no pets, smoking or collecting. Shaw offers over twenty five things to do while in the reserve. This is really an enjoyable day in the out of doors. And, don’t forget to take your camera!
