At least one eastbound lane of Highway 54 in Osage Beach was closed Sunday morning as crews investigated an accident involving a vehicle entering the Lake of the Ozarks.
According to the Osage Beach Police Department, at approximately 4:45 a.m., a passenger vehicle driven by a 23-year-old Springfield man traveling eastbound near the Grand Glaize Bridge hit the guardrail, jumped the guardrail, rolled down an embankment and plunged into the Lake of the Ozarks.
A responding officer entered the lake to locate passenger(s) in the vehicle. Another officer located the unresponsive driver on the bank of the lake at the 1 mile marker of the Grand Glaize Arm across from Formula Boats of Missouri Marina, where he was transported to a local marina before an ambulance took him to Lake Regional Hospital. A helicopter then transported the driver from Lake Regional to University Hospital in Columbia.
According to the Osage Beach Police Department, the officer entering the water did not discover any other passengers in the vehicle. The vehicle, a Suzuki, was raised by Atlantis Dive and Tow Boat USA.
As of Sunday morning, the Missouri State Highway Patrol Crash Reconstruction Unit was on the scene to determine more details about the wreck. The Missouri Department of Transportation was also on the scene to assist in securing traffic lanes.
