  • A conditional use permit to allow a recreational shooting competition at a ranch on Route A was approved by the Camden County Planning Commission April 16.
The CUP on large tracts of property zoned A-1, agricultural, and R-1, low density residential, was issued to Jeff Welch with Generation III Gun, Inc., a non-profit organization that supports youth participation in shooting sports and promotes gun safety.
Welch provided the commission with a layout of the eight firing stages of the competition which will feature pistol, shotgun and rifle shooting. No rifle targets will be setup past 350 yards, he said.
Only two of the stages are within the P&Z district the majority of the 1,050 acre Zeman Ranch lies outside its boundaries.
There will also be no firing towards the west or the south to avoid firing even in the general direction of any residences. Welch agreed that no parking will be allowed along Route A, no explosives would be set off and that the time of the contest would be limited to 8 a.m. to 45 minutes before sunset. There is also no alcohol allowed during the shoot itself.
The competition will be held Sept. 5-7 this year, and is planned to be an annual event that will be a major fundraiser for Generation III Gun.
A handful of residents near the ranch attended the P&Z meeting March 19 to oppose the CUP due to past troubles with shooting events held at the ranch.
According to Welch and others in support of the event, they are a different organization that will be responsible and more considerate. They engaged Camden County Emergency Management Director John Page as a volunteer to review their layout of the shooting ranges for the competition in order to provide a third party safety review.
Page has reviewed and approved the staging of the competition.
