Co-Mo Connect is now signing up subscribers in the second phase of its fiber-to-the-home project.

 Co-Mo Connect is a fast, reliable fiber-to-the-home network offering Internet, TV and telephone throughout the Co-Mo Electric Cooperative service territory. The network is operated by the cooperative’s communications subsidiary.

 Phase 2 includes areas south of Tipton and California and west of Laurie toward the Cole Camp and Warsaw areas. Co-Mo members can find out which phase of the anticipated four-phase project they are in by visiting

 Internet speeds range from 5 megabits per second up to 1 gigabit — 1,000 megabits — per second. Prices start at $39.95 a month. Bundling discounts are available for those who choose multiple services — $15 off the monthly bill for those picking two services and $35 a month for those signing up for all three.

“This is the gold standard of communications,” said Ken Johnson, Co-Mo Connect’s president and General Manager/CEO of Co-Mo Electric Cooperative. “There is nothing faster in the world for residents and businesses than what we’re offering with Internet, nothing clearer or more advanced for television and telephone, and it’s all right here in our little slice of rural Missouri.”

 Phase 2 signups will incorporate lessons learned from Phase 1, said Randy Klindt, Connect’s general manager.

 “In Phase 1, we opened up signups for a huge area all at once. Some of those subscribers were online with us in a few months. For others, it was a year or more from when they signed up, which is a long time to be sitting there wondering,” Klindt said. “So we’re going to open up signups only to a smaller piece of Phase 2 at a time so there isn’t such a big lag between signup and installation.”

 In addition, construction will proceed through Phase 2 according to a logical construction plan that extends from Phase 1. 

“With Phase 1, we held a contest to see which areas would have the most signups by the end of the signup period and we started construction there,” Klindt said. “That led to some jumping back and forth with our construction crews around the Phase 1 area, which slowed us down a bit.”

 With those lessons learned, Klindt said Phase 2 should take about a year from when construction begins.

 “We’re looking forward to a busy construction season this year as we finish Phase 1 and proceed through Phase 2,” he said.

 Residents in the Phase 2 project area will be contacted by mail and email when their signup period opens. They can also visit and enter their Co-Mo Electric account number in the field on the homepage. If their account is eligible to sign up, they will be able to do so online at that time. If not, they will be told their signup period has not begun.

 “Each thing we do, each step we take, there is a lesson learned,” Klindt said. “The further we go in this project, the more lessons we apply to make things run more smoothly. It’s been a great learning process.”

 Fiber is the latest technology and far surpasses what was previously available in the Co-Mo service territory in speed, reliability and clarity.  Fiber optics allow for massive amounts of data to be transmitted at light speed without caps and throttling.

 “We have heard from all sorts of people, from those who like to stream movies or those who are gamers, from those who are going back to school online or those who just enjoy downloading photos of the grandkids, that they spend so much less time waiting for their Internet to catch up with their lives,” Johnson said. “That’s one of the main advantages of Co-Mo Connect.”

 Johnson also emphasized the local customer service, and the fact that money spent with Co-Mo Connect stays local instead of being shipped to far-away shareholders.

 “When you pay your Co-Mo Connect bill, that money goes right back into the community in terms of the salaries we pay our employees and the investments we make in the areas we serve,” Johnson said. “And if you’re a Co-Mo Electric member, because of the fact that we’re not-for-profit and that we pay capital credits on money earned above and beyond the cost of doing business, when you pay that Co-Mo Connect bill, you’re actually paying yourself.”
