  • Morgan County CLEAR (Community Leaders Educating About Resistance) is sponsoring a Youth Mental Health First Aid Training from 8 a.m.-5 p.m. Wednesday, April 30 at the Bank of Versailles, Motor Bank, at 119 N. Fisher St. in Versailles.
Youth Mental Health First Aid is a training program focused on helping children ages 12-18 who may be experiencing a mental health challenge or in a crisis.
The course is designed for adults whom regularly interact with adolescents, but may also be appropriate for older adolescents - 16 and older - to encourage youth peer-to-peer interaction. It teaches the participants the risk factors and warning signs of a variety of mental health challenges common among adolescents, including anxiety, depression, psychosis, eating disorders, AD/HD, disruptive behavior disorders and substance abuse disorder.
Participants do not learn to diagnose or how to provide therapy or counseling, but they do learn a five step action plan to support an adolescent developing signs and symptoms of mental illness or in an emotional crisis. The plan includes assessment for risk of suicide or harm, listen non-judgementally, give reassurance and information, encourage appropriate professional help and encourage self-help and other support strategies.
Email your name, address, phone number, email address, role and organization if interested in attending to chapman1@vpclinks.com. The training is free, but registration is required by Monday, April 28. It is limited to 50 attendees. Call 573-789-5509 with questions.
