  • URBANA - Macks Creek jumped out to an 8-0 lead in the bottom of the first and never looked back in a 13-1, four-inning win over the Climax Spring Cougars on Thursday night.  The game was the final for both teams in pool play of the Wheatland/Halfway Tournament.  The Pirates finished 2-1 and the Cougars 1-2 in the pool.
Climax Springs loaded the bases in the top of the first.  Chase Wallace was hit-by-a-pitch, Alex Mustain walked, and Seth Cline followed a strike out with a walk.  All three runners would be stranded.   Brian Devivo led off the bottom of the inning with a walk and stole second.  With one out, Matt Hicks hit a flare into short right, moving Brian to third.  A hit-by-pitch on Cameron Charlton loaded the bases for the Pirates.  Jacob Devivo smacked a ground ball through the legs of the first baseman to plate Brian for a 1-0 lead.  Austin Bryner then executed a squeeze bunt to plate Hicks.  After a pop out, Chase Schmidt ripped a ground ball through the first baseman's legs again to plate courtesy runner Ben Lutz and Bryner.  Austin Mitchell then walked.  Brian Devivo hit a hard single up the middle to plate both Schmidt and Mitchell and push the lead to 7-0.  He would later score and create an 8-0 lead.   "We came out with a very good approach at the plate tonight," said Coach Trusty, "good things happen when you hit the baseball."   The Pirates plate three more runs in the second inning.  Bryner reached on an error at third, stole second, and moved to third on a wild pitch.  Chase Schmidt then hit a slow roller to the first baseman to push Bryner across.  Mitchell followed with his second walk and came around to score when Brian ripped a triple over the head of the center fielder. He would also score on the play when the relay throw sailed into the dugout.   Climax plated their tally in the top of the third.  Wallace laced a single up the middle ahead of a Mustain single to center.  Both runners would advance when the ball from center rolled into the dugout.  Michael Brown followed with a bloop single to right, plating Wallace, with Brown being thrown out at second trying to stretch the hit into a double.   Macks Creek plated a single tally in the third when Matt Hicks singled and moved to second on an error before Charlton singled up the middle.  Mitchell walked in the bottom of the fourth before Brian singled up the middle to plate him and end the game on the tournament run-rule.   "Much better performance for us tonight at the plate.  I told our guys that if we could put the ball in play and make them play defense, things would happen for us," commented Trusty.   Brian Devivo led the Pirates' offense with a three-for-three night that included two singles, a triple, a walk, three runs scored, and four RBI's.  Matt Hicks collected two singles in three trips to the plate and also scored twice.  Cameron Charlton singled once, was hit-by-a-pitch twice, and collected an RBI.  Austin Bryner collected the other hit, a single in the third, as well as an RBI-squeeze bunt, and scored two runs.  Tommie Willis reached base twice, Jacob Devivo did as well and scored a run, Chase Schmidt was on base twice, collected an RBI, and scored a run, while Austin Mitchell walked three times and scored three runs.  Ben Lutz scored a run as a pinch runner.   Chase Wallace and Alex Mustain each went one-for-one at the plate.  Wallace also scored the lone Cougar run.  Michael Brown had an RBI-single in the contest.  Seth Cline and Dylan Orman each walked.   Pirates' starter Tommie Willis moved to 2-0 with his four innings of work.  He allowed an unearned run on three hits while striking out 10, walking three, and hitting two batters.   Michael Brown took the loss for the Cougars.  He worked the first three innings, allowing 12 runs, three earned, on six hits while striking out three, walking three, and hitting two batters.  Seth Cline relieved and allowed one run on one hit without recording an out.   Macks Creek moves to 4-4 with the win.  They will play again on Friday against either Humansville or Wheatland in crossover play.  Game time is to be determined.   BOX SCORE                  1   2   3   4   5   6   7    R   H   E CS           0   0   1   0                   1    3   6
