Osage's match against Rolla saw the Indians use strong and consistent play to win eight of their nine matches on Tuesday evening.
Spotty rain Tuesday steered clear of the Country Club Hotel and Spa enough to allow the Osage tennis team to dominate the Rolla Bulldogs 8-1.
Strong winds, however, made play a little treacherous as the Indians worked to improve to 2-0 on the season.
Leading the way for the Indians was senior Thomas Uhl at number one. With some tentative play early in the match, Uhl went down one break, but rallied to an 8-4 win over Nathan Graham.
"Thomas had to play smart," Coach Scott Blacksher said. "He knew he could get back in the match."
Uhl capitalized on his opponent's weaker serves with consistent play.
"He [Uhl] doesn't beat himself," Blacksher said.
Consistent play also drove numbers two and three, seniors Ryan Curran and Adam Keith to easy 8-1 victories over their Rolla opponents. Blacksher's top three players all played with calmness, letting the Rolla players make the errors. That type of play, Blacksher said, should boost the trio to success in 2014.
"All three have great personalities for the game of tennis," he said. "That's something all three have had for years."
The younger players on the team also performed well against Rolla. Sophomores Jordan Wilson and Adam Schoening, playing at numbers 4 and 5, won 8-2 and 8-1 respectively.
Both players have improved vastly from their freshman season. Their ability to compete in matches more this year, Blacksher said, will be key to Osage's overall record in 2014. With dual matches set in a best-one-nine match format, Blacksher said he'll need Wilson and Schoening to pull off a win.
"They're both playing much better than last year," he said. "Their technique is much improved."
In doubles play, Uhl/Wilson won 8-4, Curran/Keith won 8-2 and Schoening/Phillip Kirby won 8-6. Strong net play drove the Osage pairs to victory.
The Indians opened their season with an impressive 9-0 win over Boonville. The team plays in the Laker tournament Thursday and will face Fulton Friday.
