URBANA - Macks Creek returned to action on Tuesday night in pool play of the Wheatland/Halfway Tournament. They met up with the seventh ranked Class 2 Skyline Tigers and fell by the score of 14 - 1 in five innings.
Skyline loaded the bases in the top half of the first but were unable to score. In the second they plate two runs. Corbin Cole singled and move to second on a stolen base. A throwing error in an attempt to steal third resulted in a run down between third and home, with Cole being tagged out. Brandon Keller then singled ahead of a Lane Wisdom walk. Wyatt Dampier then drove a ball back up the middle to plate both runners. Macks Creek would answer with one of their own in the bottom of the second. Jacob Devivo singled and moved to third on wild pitches. Austin Mitchell drew a two-out walk before Brian Devivo drove in his brother to cut the lead to 2-1. It was the last time the Pirates would score in the contest. The Tigers plated two more in the fourth. Chase Glor was hit-by-a-pitch and Zac Vader walked. Both would come into score on a Cole single to right-center field and a 4-1 Skyline lead. They would put the game away with two more in the fourth and eight runs in the fifth. "We struggled at times to throw strikes tonight," said Coach Jason Trusty, "our defense got a little flat footed and the balls that we should have made plays on eluded us. Skyline put the ball in play consistently and forced us to have to play defense. Matt Hicks took the loss for the Pirates. The Sophomore righty went three innings before being lifted for a reliever. He allowed four runs on five hits while striking out two, walking three, and hitting two batters. Jacob Devivo worked an inning, allowing two unearned runs on one hit while striking out one, walking two, and hitting one. Andrew Kohler worked a third of an inning, allowing eight runs, three earned, on six hits and walked one batter. Jimmy Willis worked two-thirds of an inning and allowed one hit. Wyatt Dampier worked four-plus innings. He allowed a single run on five hits while striking out six and walking three. Ryan Melton threw the fifth inning and struck out one batter. Brian Devivo paced the Pirates offense with a three-for-three night. He also collected the lone RBI. Jacob Devivo singled and scored the only Macks Creek run. Tommie Willis walked, Matt Hicks singled and reached on a fielder's choice, and Austin Mitchell walked twice. Corbin Cole collected three hits in three official at-bats to pace the Tigers' offense. He also walked once, scored a run, and had three RBI's. Wyatt Dampier and Ethan DaMitz each had two hits while Drew Flagg, Zac Vader, Ryan Melton, Brandon Keller, Jordan Brown, and Lane Wisdom each had a hit. Dampier, DaMitz, and Wisdom also scored twice each with Flagg, Glor, Vader, Chipper Berry, Melton, Keller, Brown scoring one run apiece. Dampier, DaMitz, and Wisdom each had two RBI's while Vader and Berry had one. Macks Creek falls to 3-4 while Skyline improves to 7-1. Both conclude pool play on Thursday night with Macks Creek facing Climax Springs at 4 p.m. and Skyline taking on Niangua at 6:15.
