  • April is National Child Abuse Prevention Month and one lake area organization partnering with other organizations, businesses and volunteers to raise awareness about what individuals, communities and organizations across the region can do to prevent child abuse.
Kids’ Harbor is a child advocacy center serving the Lake of the Ozarks area in Central Missouri, Fort Leonard Wood and surrounding areas. The organization assists victims of child abuse and their non-offending family members as they make their way through the difficult and often frightening process of a child abuse investigation.
Last year, Kids’ Harbor received over 600 child abuse referrals at their two centers located in Osage Beach and St. Robert. Of those children, over 80% were sexual abuse victims.
“Child abuse statistics can be sobering, 1 in 10 children will be sexually abused before they turn 18, that is nearly 400,000 children each year,” says Cara Gerdiman, executive Director of Kids’ Harbor. “The good news is that our community can prevent child abuse and neglect before it happens.”
