  • MACKS CREEK - The Macks Creek Pirates played host to the Tuscumbia Lions in their home and season opener and fell by the score of 11-1.
Macks Creek tallied a single run in the first.  Brian Devivo walked and was erased on a Tommie Willis fielder's choice.  Eric Waters then tripled down the right field line, plating Tommie for a 1-0 Pirate lead.  It would last until the third.   With one out in the visitor's half of the third Marshall Berry singled and stole second.  Quentin King was then hit-by-a-pitch before both runners would advance via the stolen base.  Wyatt Ahart hit a slow roller to the right side of the mound, which plated Berry.  Zane Humphreys was then hit-by-a-pitch and stole second.  Orrie Patterson hit a bloop single to left that pushed both runners across for a 3-1 lead.   In the fourth the Lions took advantage of some wild Macks Creek pitching to plate five runs.  Ben WIlson, King, an Orrie all collected hits in the inning.  They would put the game away with three runs in the top of the fifth and hold the Pirates in the bottom half.   "First game out of the gates for us and we have some guys that are getting their first taste of the Varsity level," said Macks Creek Head Coach Jason Trusty.   Ben Lutz made his Varsity debut on the hill for the Pirates.  The Sophomore righty went three-and-a-third innings, allowing six runs on four hits while walking five and hitting three batters.  Andrew Kohler worked an inning of relief and allowed five runs, three earned, on four hits while walking four and striking out one.  Sophomore Jimmy Willis also made his debut for the Pirates in the fifth.  He struck out one and induced a fly to the only other batter we faced.   "A couple of new guys that are going to be contributing on the bump for us this year," commented Trusty, "the only downside to tonight's game is that we gave out nine free passes in the form of walks and four others in hit-by-pitches.  We will need to get those numbers down significantly to be competitive this season."   Wyatt Ahart picked up the win for the Lions.  The righthander worked all five innings, allowing one run on three hits while striking out seven, walking two, and hitting one batter.   Offensively the Pirates managed only three hits.  Tommie Willis and Cameron Charlton both singled while Eric Waters banged out an RBI-triple.  Tommie also scored the lone Pirate run.  Brian Devivo reached twice via the walk and Jacob Devivo reached on a hit-by-pitch.   Orrie Patterson helped pace the Lion offense with a two-for-three night.  Marshall Berry, Quentin King, Wyatt Ahart, Ben Wilson, and Nick Grimwood each collected hits in the contest as well.  Berry scored three times while King, Wilson, and Grimwood each scored two times.  Orrie also had three RBI's and Ahart and King had two apiece.   Macks Creek falls to 0-1 and the Lions improve to 1-1.   Macks Creek won a short JV game, 1-0.
