  • Caring for a loved one with an ongoing health condition can be challenging, but Lake Regional Health System is offering help.
Lake Regional will host the free seminar, “How to Care for Loved Ones at Home,” from 10 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Tuesday, March 18, in the hospital’s third floor conference rooms. A break will be taken for lunch.
“Millions of family members currently care for a loved one at home,” said Billye Bennett, R.N., Lake Regional community education coordinator. “This free program offers important information to help those who are in this vital health care role.”
“How to Care for Loved Ones at Home” will be presented by Lake Regional staff from the dietitian, social work, home health and physical therapy departments. Topics will include medication; home and oxygen safety; meal preparation; healthy eating; personal care; lifting and transferring techniques; community resources; infection control; and infusion therapy.
In addition, caregivers will learn to manage legal and financial issues, as well as difficult behaviors of dementia patients. Coping with stress, depression and loss also will be discussed.
“It’s important that caregivers remember to take care of themselves,” said Jamie Wilson, LMSW, director of Social Work Services at Lake Regional. “If they fail to take care of themselves while caring for a loved one, both parties can feel the effects. Not only is it necessary, it’s one of the most beneficial things a caregiver can do for their loved one.”
Registration for the free seminar is required. Visit lakeregional.com/events to register, or call 573-348-8222 for more information.
Lake Regional offers a variety of educational programming topics during the year, such as diabetes, heart disease and childhood obesity. Several health fairs and screenings also are held annually throughout the lake area. For information on upcoming events, visit lakeregional.com/events.
