Last Friday, Jan. 10, at 6 p.m., the Morgan County Sheriffs office was dispatched to a residence in Rocky Mount in reference to a burglary in progress with an armed suspect. Upon arrival, the deputies made contact with three people who were occupying the home at the time of the crime. The suspect had already fled and was apprehended a short time later after injuring himself in an attempt to flee.
Now, unfortunately, we see this sort of thing from time to time here at the lake. As our population has grown over the years, we have seen a rise in the number of violent crimes that take place here in our hometown. What makes this one special, though, is that, for a change, the bad guy was caught, and the reason he was caught is that one of his potential "victims" had the foresight to obtain a CCW (carry concealed weapon) permit.
This is a perfect example of how allowing ordinary citizens to lawfully arm themselves prevents crime. This started out as a burglary, but it could have very easily have ended up a triple homicide. Many criminals have murdered the folks they rob to eliminate witnesses. We have seen a few of these unfortunate incidents play out locally in the past few years.
It is a proven fact that crime rates are lower where concealed weapon laws exist. Most criminals do not want to risk an encounter with an armed victim. They prefer their victims unarmed, weaker, and essentially helpless when they perpetrate their crimes upon them. In point of fact, the areas of our country that have the strictest gun control laws, such as Chicago and Washington D.C., have the highest crime rates! The bad guys know where people are allowed to possess firearms for personal defense and, as such, they choose to commit their robberies, home invasions and the like in places that do not allow their citizens the right to defend themselves.
My wife and I both have CCW permits. We had to undergo the appropriate training, background checks and fingerprinting process required to obtain these permits. Those who are against carrying a weapon for defending themselves and their children certainly have the right to decide not to carry. I have no problem with that. I do, however, take issue with anyone, be it an individual, corporate entity, or government official, who would deny me my right to carry a firearm for self-defense. You simply have no right to tell others they cannot defend themselves.
We live way out in the country. If a home invader or burglar decides to harm me and mine, by the time the sheriff gets to us, we would all be dead. Thankfully, we live in a gun-friendly state in the greatest nation on earth. I have had many a debate with progressive liberal zealots who are so afraid of firearms that they have told me that if we were in a life and death situation together, that they would rather risk their children being shot and/or killed than have me there armed to repel the person attacking us.
Page 2 of 3 - This I cannot understand for the life of me. Either liberals do not love their kids as much as I love mine (which I sincerely doubt), or they are so stubborn when it comes to the issue of firearm ownership that they refuse to acknowledge facts when the facts do not support their way of thinking.
As a self-proclaimed "free-thinker," I refuse to limit my viewpoints on any given issue to the dogmatic principles that define Democrat and Republican philosophy. If anything, I would say I am more "middle-of-the-road" and have more in common with Libertarian philosophies than the views that seem to define "the big two” in our political system. The right to bear arms, along with the rights of free speech and peaceful assembly, are, in my opinion, the three most important ones we have as Americans. Any argument that contradicts these three basic rights is wholeheartedly un-American.
Unfortunately, many of my fellow countrymen hate our Constitution and Bill of Rights and resent the fact that it gives rights to all of us that they, themselves, disagree with on a personal level. I cannot imagine living in a country where private firearm ownership is prohibited. The notion that we, as Americans, are not to be trusted with making our own choices concerning firearm ownership is ridiculous; yet we constantly see zealots, disguised as politicians, who wish to take that choice away from us.
A prime example of this in the history books is a man most of us know. His name was Adolf Hitler and one of his first actions after taking power was to strip the right of firearm ownership away from the German people.
Do you all remember what happened next? Murder and genocide on an unprecedented scale. I have heard people say, when discussing that era, "Why did the German public allow such atrocities to take place?"
Well, Einstein, when the people committing crimes are the only ones who are armed, it kind of gives them what one would call a "Tactical Advantage" and reduces those in "the public" to mere lambs for the slaughter.
The person, whose name has not been released, who repelled this recent attack by way of their CCW permit, is a HERO.
I doubt that the mental midgets who perpetrate such crimes like the recent robbery/home invasion read the newspaper, if one such waste of space happens to be reading this article. However, I hope you are taking notes. Here in Lake of the Ozarks, we are well-armed, son, and your colleague, Fields, got off light this time. If he had come a knockin' on my door, his name would not be in the "Court Reports" section, but rather in the "Obituary Column."
Page 3 of 3 - Gee, it's not so easy when us "sheep" are better armed than you are, is it?
