  • The lake area is no stranger to violent crimes against children — 2012 saw two high-profile child abuse cases, one of which ended in the death of 3-year-old Blake Litton. The grisly discovery of a 13-year-old Iberia girl's body on June 23 sickeningly added to the grim legacy. An endangered person advisory was issued June 22 for Macala Shelton, but was soon retracted when officers found her lifeless body. She had been stabbed to death and charges were brought upon her stepfather's brother, Steven Henderson. Henderson pleaded not guilty in November, but not before a public defender accused the Miller County Sheriff's Department of violating Henderson's rights. A number of calls involving social services were made in regards to Shelton's residence, but they weren't enough to prevent another tragic and untimely death. Henderson's trial is set for July 2014.
