Just ahead of the holiday season, scam artists are using intimidation and other similar tactics to defraud Ameren Missouri customers. Ameren Missouri warns its customer to watch out for phone calls from scam artists who threaten disconnection of electric service unless a payment is made immediately. In one reported incident, a commercial customer said she received a call at her business. The caller said her account was delinquent and she had to pay immediately over the phone. She provided debit card information to make the payment but afterward became suspicious and cancelled the transaction.
"Our policy is to always work with our customers to resolve any payment questions," said Michael Moehn, senior vice president, Customer Operations. "Scam artists can be very convincing. We want our customers to know that if they're ever approached by anyone who claims they represent Ameren Missouri and they use intimidation to press for payment, they should immediately hang up and call us at 1.800.552.7583."
Ameren Missouri offers these tips against scammers:
Never give your credit card, debit card, Social Security, ATM, checking or saving account numbers to anyone who comes to your home, calls or sends an email requesting this information.
Never allow anyone into your home who wants to check your electrical wiring, natural gas pipes or appliances unless you have scheduled an appointment or have reported a natural gas leak and the person has proper identification.
Ameren Missouri employees always carry photo identification, which includes name, employee number and an official Ameren Missouri logo.
If you suspect someone is impersonating an Ameren Missouri employee, end the conversation and immediately call Ameren Missouri, 1.800.552.7583.
