Having trouble sleeping? Do you snore? It could be sleep apnea.
Lake Regional Health System Neurologist Philip Mataverde, D.O., MPH, will present an educational forum on sleep apnea risk factors, diagnosis, side effects and treatment options.
“Sleep apnea is a potentially serious sleep disorder in which you briefly stop breathing,” Dr. Mataverde said. “If left untreated, sleep apnea could have serious consequences, like high blood pressure, heart disease and stroke.”
The free seminar is scheduled at 10 a.m. Thursday, Nov. 7, in the third floor conference rooms at Lake Regional Hospital. Preregistration for the seminar is required. To register, visit lakeregional.com/events or call 573-348-8222.
For individuals interested in discovering if they suffer from sleep apnea, Lake Regional Health System’s Sleep Lab offers a full range of diagnostic testing, including sleep studies (polysomnograms), multiple sleep latency testing and maintenance of wakefulness testing.
“The studies are painless, noninvasive procedures,” Dr. Mataverde said. “During the test, sensors are applied to the surface of the skin. The results can lead to proper diagnosis and ultimately, a better night’s rest and overall health.”
Lake Regional offers a variety of educational programming topics during the year, such as diabetes, heart disease and childhood obesity. Several health fairs and screenings also are held annually throughout the lake area. For information on upcoming events, visit lakeregional.com/events.
